William Dorland Brown was born on a farm in Otsego County, N.Y. in 1887. He attended a two year course in the College of Agriculture, specializing in dairying, animal husbandry and farm mechanics, graduating in 1909. After college he worked in cattle breeding and became associated with the Otsego County Farm Bureau. He worked for the Holstein Association until his retirement in 1958. The first Farmers' Week at the New York State College of Agriculture was held in 1908.
